How to connect Printful to Shopify

Shopify is your own branded storefront; Printful prints and ships. Connect them once and orders fulfill themselves. Here's every step — plus the settings that quietly eat your margin if you get them wrong.

Some links below are affiliate links. If you start a store through them we may earn a small commission at no cost to you — it doesn't change the steps or the advice.

This takes about 20 minutes. You'll need a Shopify store and a free Printful account. Unlike Etsy, Shopify doesn't bring buyers — you bring the traffic — but you own the brand and the customer relationship.

Step 1 — Start your Shopify store

Create a Shopify account and finish onboarding (store name, theme, payment). Note: Shopify charges a monthly subscription — that's separate from Printful and unavoidable on this platform. If you want a $0-to-start path instead, see the Etsy setup.

Step 2 — Create your free Printful account

Sign up for Printful — no monthly fee, so this part costs nothing. You only pay when a customer orders.

Step 3 — Install the Printful app

  1. In the Shopify App Store, search Printful and click Install (or start from Printful: Stores → Choose platform → Shopify).
  2. Authorize the connection when Shopify prompts you.
  3. You're returned to Printful with Shopify linked. Connection done.

Step 4 — Add a product and publish to Shopify

  1. Hit Add product, pick your item (start with one hero product), and upload your design.
  2. Set the retail price — cover Printful's fulfillment price plus a deliberate margin. Don't price at cost.
  3. Write the product title and description, then Submit to store. It appears as a Shopify product.

⚠️ Gotcha 1 — shipping rates

Shopify won't automatically charge Printful's shipping cost. Set a flat shipping rate that covers it, or enable carrier-calculated shipping so customers pay Printful's live rate. Skip this and shipping comes out of your margin.

⚠️ Gotcha 2 — the monthly fee math

Shopify's subscription means you need a baseline of sales just to break even before profit. Make sure your margin per item × expected volume clears the monthly fee.

Step 5 — Order a sample (don't skip)

Order one sample of your hero product before you drive any traffic. See the print, color, and packaging exactly as your customer will. This single habit prevents most bad reviews and refunds.

That's it — paid Shopify orders now flow to Printful automatically. New to all this? Read the full creator's guide to launching merch →
